    Dynamic Triaxial and Vibratory In-Situ Behavior of Cohesive Soil

    In-situ and laboratory shear modulus data are presented and compared. In-situ tests included the cross-hole seismic survey at a stiff marl site, while laboratory tests included the cyclic triaxial test on undisturbed specimens obtained from the same site. The cyclic triaxial device presented in this investigation has been developed and improved so that the reliable response of soil can be measured directly from the specimen over a large range of strain (from 10-6 to 10-2 ). A series of cyclic triaxial tests were performed under stress controlled condition over a range of frequency from 0,5 to 10 Hz on marl samples consolidated anisotropically. Values of shear modulus and damping ration determined for shearing strain amplitude between 10-6 and 10-2 and compared with published results proposed by Seed and Idriss (1970) and Hardin and Drnevich (1972). At low strains, the shear modulus values measured by in-situ and laboratory methods were in a good agreement, but the values from the Hardin-Black\u27s equation were underestimated. The influence of consolidation stress, frequency, and number of load cycles on the shear modulus have also been investigated

    In this third and final paper of a series, elastic properties of numerically simulated isotropic packings of spherical beads assembled by different procedures and subjected to a varying confining pressure P are investigated. In addition P, which determines the stiffness of contacts by Hertz's law, elastic moduli are chiefly sensitive to the coordination number, the possible values of which are not necessarily correlated with the density. Comparisons of numerical and experimental results for glass beads in the 10kPa-10MPa range reveal similar differences between dry samples compacted by vibrations and lubricated packings. The greater stiffness of the latter, in spite of their lower density, can hence be attributed to a larger coordination number. Voigt and Reuss bounds bracket bulk modulus B accurately, but simple estimation schemes fail for shear modulus G, especially in poorly coordinated configurations under low P. Tenuous, fragile networks respond differently to changes in load direction, as compared to load intensity. The shear modulus, in poorly coordinated packings, tends to vary proportionally to the degree of force indeterminacy per unit volume. The elastic range extends to small strain intervals, in agreement with experimental observations. The origins of nonelastic response are discussed. We conclude that elastic moduli provide access to mechanically important information about coordination numbers, which escape direct measurement techniques, and indicate further perspectives.Comment: Published in Physical Review E 25 page

    Internal states of model isotropic granular packings. I. Assembling process, geometry and contact networks

    This is the first paper of a series of three, reporting on numerical simulation studies of geometric and mechanical properties of static assemblies of spherical beads under an isotropic pressure. Frictionless systems assemble in the unique random close packing (RCP) state in the low pressure limit if the compression process is fast enough, slower processes inducing traces of crystallization, and exhibit specific properties directly related to isostaticity of the force-carrying structure. The different structures of frictional packings assembled by various methods cannot be classified by the sole density. While lubricated systems approach RCP densities and coordination number z^*~=6 on the backbone in the rigid limit, an idealized "vibration" procedure results in equally dense configurations with z^*~=4.5. Near neighbor correlations on various scales are computed and compared to available laboratory data, although z^* values remain experimentally inaccessible. Low coordination packings have many rattlers (more than 10% of the grains carry no force), which should be accounted for on studying position correlations, and a small proportion of harmless "floppy modes" associated with divalent grains. Frictional packings, however slowly assembled under low pressure, retain a finite level of force indeterminacy, except in the limit of infinite friction.Comment: 29 pages.     Computer simulation of model cohesive powders: Plastic consolidation, structural changes and elasticity under isotropic loads

    The quasistatic behavior of a simple 2D model of a cohesive powder under isotropic loads is investigated by Discrete Element simulations. The loose packing states, as studied in a previous paper, undergo important structural changes under growing confining pressure P, while solid fraction \Phi irreversibly increases by large amounts. The system state goes through three stages, with different forms of the plastic consolidation curve \Phi(P*), under growing reduced pressure P* = Pa/F0, defined with adhesion force F0 and grain diameter a. In the low-confinement regime (I), plastic compaction is negligible, and the structure is influenced by the assembling process. The following stage (regime II) is independent of initial conditions. The void ratio varies linearly with log P, as described in the engineering literature. In the last stage of compaction (III), a maximum solid fraction is approached, and properties of cohesionless granular packs are retrieved. Under consolidation, while the fractal range of density correlations decreases, force patterns reorganize, and elastic moduli increase by a large factor. Plastic deformation events correspond to very small changes in the network topology, while the denser regions tend to move like rigid bodies. Elastic properties are dominated by the bending of thin junctions in loose systems. For growing RR those tend to reduce to particle chains, the folding of which, rather than tensile ruptures, controls plastic compaction

    Rupture by damage accumulation in rocks

    The deformation of rocks is associated with microcracks nucleation and propagation, i.e. damage. The accumulation of damage and its spatial localization lead to the creation of a macroscale discontinuity, so-called "fault" in geological terms, and to the failure of the material, i.e. a dramatic decrease of the mechanical properties as strength and modulus. The damage process can be studied both statically by direct observation of thin sections and dynamically by recording acoustic waves emitted by crack propagation (acoustic emission). Here we first review such observations concerning geological objects over scales ranging from the laboratory sample scale (dm) to seismically active faults (km), including cliffs and rock masses (Dm, hm). These observations reveal complex patterns in both space (fractal properties of damage structures as roughness and gouge), time (clustering, particular trends when the failure approaches) and energy domains (power-law distributions of energy release bursts). We use a numerical model based on progressive damage within an elastic interaction framework which allows us to simulate these observations. This study shows that the failure in rocks can be the result of damage accumulation

    Enhancing access to reports of randomized trials published world-wide – the contribution of EMBASE records to the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in The Cochrane Library

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Randomized trials are essential in assessing the effects of healthcare interventions and are a key component in systematic reviews of effectiveness. Searching for reports of randomized trials in databases is problematic due to the absence of appropriate indexing terms until the 1990s and inconsistent application of these indexing terms thereafter.</p> <p>Objectives</p> <p>The objectives of this study are to devise a search strategy for identifying reports of randomized trials in EMBASE which are not already indexed as trials in MEDLINE and to make these reports easily accessible by including them in the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) in <it>The Cochrane Library</it>, with the permission of Elsevier, the publishers of EMBASE.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A highly sensitive search strategy was designed for EMBASE based on free-text and thesaurus terms which occurred frequently in the titles, abstracts, EMTREE terms (or some combination of these) of reports of trials indexed in EMBASE. This search strategy was run against EMBASE from 1980 to 2005 (1974 to 2005 for four of the terms) and records retrieved by the search, which were not already indexed as randomized trials in MEDLINE, were downloaded from EMBASE, printed and read. An analysis of the language of publication was conducted for the reports of trials published in 2005 (the most recent year completed at the time of this study).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Twenty-two search terms were used (including nine which were later rejected due to poor cumulative precision). More than a third of a million records were downloaded and scanned and approximately 80,000 reports of trials were identified which were not already indexed as randomized trials in MEDLINE. These are now easily identifiable in CENTRAL, in <it>The Cochrane Library</it>. Cumulative sensitivity ranged from 0.1% to 60% and cumulative precision ranged from 8% to 61%. The truncated term 'random$' identified 60% of the total number of reports of trials but only 35% of the more than 130,000 records retrieved by this term were reports of trials. The language analysis for the sample year 2005 indicated that of the 18,427 reports indexed as randomized trials in MEDLINE, 959 (5%) were in languages other than English. The EMBASE search identified an additional 658 reports in languages other than English, of which the highest number were in Chinese (320).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of the search to date have greatly increased access to reports of trials in EMBASE, especially in some languages other than English. The search strategy used was subjectively derived from a small 'gold standard' set of test records and was not validated in an independent test set. We intend to design an objectively-derived validated search strategy using logistic regression based on the frequency of occurrence of terms in the approximately 80,000 reports of randomized trials identified compared with the frequency of these terms across the entire EMBASE database.</p

    Plastic flow laws express relationships between stress and strain space paths, the latter being identified in tenns of lime. A distinction can be made between continuous strain and dis conti nuity surface laws. To establish these, it is necessary to carry out tests in order to measure stress and shain tensors, which can only be done with a homogeneous spatial tensor distribution. As the instruments do not produce homogeneous fields, they can only measure the parameters of a law if the law is known. In theory, plastic flow laws can be established with the aid of general relationships between particles and from the geometry of the structure. A material for which these relationships are constant only changes its mechanical properties with the geometry of its structure, which solely depends on irreversible strains undergone by the material; this explains the "work-hardening' or "super-consolidation' which, with a sufficiently simple path, can be characlerized by the stress tensor for the final irreversible strain. The author introduces a new laboratory instrument for the measurement of the plastic flow relationship for very high homogeneous strain conditions, and also a simple instrument for quick in situ cohesion, friction and stability measurement, especially for sand and mud. Muel can be considered as not very dense normally consolidated soil having remained under water since its original deposition. The author has no precise measured plastic flow data available for mud; he simply correlates its physical and mechanical properties. For example, as its water content is near the liquidity limit WL at shallow depUIS, its approximate compressibility can be established from WL. The relevant cohesion data show considerable scatter but the average values for individual sites appear to increase with the consistency index. Rapid construction on mud results in high interstitial pressures, i.e. very low strength if the mud contains little clay. Bearing strength can be much improved by the use of non-stretch matting placed crosswise, for which the author suggests a calculation method
